Medical Sciences Division

The Medical Sciences Division is a newly created division at PPCC which was formerly a part of the Health and Sciences Division.  This new division is working to meet the PPCC mission of providing high quality healthcare educational opportunities to all with a focus on student success and community needs.  The Medical Sciences Division (MS) is currently comprised of 12 departments.

PPCC can provide you the kind of advanced training you'll need to enter a variety of professions in the ever-expanding, high-paying fields of healthcare. Our accredited nursing program, considered one of the best in Colorado, stands as the centerpiece of the College's healthcare offerings, which also include radiology, dental assisting, phlebotomy and more.

Allied Health

Associates of Applied Science
 
Allied Health degree students will take classes which will qualify them to complete the state EMT certification, Nurses Aid certification and almost all of the Phlebotomy Certification program classes.

Certificate Program

Medical Coding Specialist

Certificate Program
 

Medical Coders review patient information for preexisting conditions,, assign a appropriate diagnoses and procedure codes for patient care and billing purposes. They may advance into the area of Cancer Registrars who also review patient records and reports for accuracy and assign classification codes to represent the diagnosis and treatment of cancers and benign tumors.

Medical Receptionist

Certificate Program

Medical Receptionists may work in a hospital, outpatient clinic or a doctor's office, the potential to obtain a certification is right here. Specialize in obtaining information for medical records as well as maintaining quality and security in both paper and electronic systems. You may take simple medical histories, initiate referrals to specialist, confirm insurance coverage and process insurance payments.

Careers in Medical Sciences

Example Classes You Might Take

Teaches the anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology and drug therapy of the immune, musculoskeletal, and digestive systems. A discussion of pediatric implications as they relate to clinical physiology will also be covered. Students may take MOT 125, MOT 133 and MOT 135 in any order, but all three courses must be completed to meet the Basic Medical Sciences requirement.
Orients students to the work of pharmacy technicians and the context in which a technicians work is performed. Students learn the concept of pharmaceutical care and the technicians general role in its delivery. The development of new drug products is discussed as well as a variety of issues that touch on attitudes, value and beliefs of success for pharmacy technicians. Students gain an appreciation for the value of obtaining technician certification, and the benefits of technicians active involvement in local, state, and national pharmacy organizations.
Includes fundamentals of the oral structures as they apply to oral histology, embryology, morphology, pathology, dental anatomy, and dental charting.
Includes basic information concerning infection and disease transmission in the dental office. Emphasizes knowledge of microorganisms, with an emphasis on aseptic techniques, sterilization, and hazardous communication management.
NUR 106 is the first medical/surgical nursing course. Building on NUR 109, this course provides for the acquisition of basic medical/surgical nursing theory, as well as application of mental health concepts, communication, collaboration, caring, and critical thinking/clinical reasoning necessary for safe, patient-centered care to a developmentally and culturally diverse adult patient population experiencing various medical/surgical interventions. Incorporates evidence-based practice, quality improvement, professional standards, and legal and ethical responsibilities of the nurse. Application of knowledge and skills occurs in the nursing skills laboratory and a variety of clinical settings.
