Creating Better Roadmaps

When you work in an institution as complex as a community college, it's easy to get mired in the day to day. The urgent always shines brightly for our attention. But it's important, every once in a while, to take a big step back and look at your institution holistically.

At Pikes Peak Community College, we create a new strategic plan every five years. Keeping in mind our central vision, dedicating ourselves first and foremost to student success, we look at the evolving landscapes in education and the workforce to create new roadmaps with goals and tactics of how best to achieve that success. We draft these plans to closely align with the strategic plans of the Colorado Community College System, which governs Pikes Peak and the 12 other Colorado community colleges.

Our current strategic plan, Destination 2022, is coming to a close, and so we are developing a new strategic plan to take us forward over the next 5 years. That effort will be led the Core Strategy Team, a group of faculty and staff from across the College.

The CST has broken up into 5 small working groups dedicated to broad areas of concern:

  • Academics
  • Assessment/Data/Administrative Processes

  • Equity and Inclusion
  • Students

As planning proceeds, these groups may evolve, refining or reframing their emphases.

Listening Sessions

The first step in the strategic planning process is gathering information about what PPCC community members are thinking about and are concerned about: what are we doing well, what do need to change or improve, what opportunities and challenges lie ahead.

Toward that end, the CST has begun conducting listening sessions with groups across campus. After the spring semester begins, we’ll schedule broader sessions for faculty, staff, students, and community members. As we firm up dates and times, invitations will be sent out. (The listening sessions will be a mix of in-person and virtual, as conditions permit).

Listening sessions will continue through mid-March, at which point, the CST will synthesize the themes articulated so far, and share those with the broader community for feedback.

Online survey:

In addition to the listening sessions, the CST is creating a survey that will go out to the entire PPCC community. This will give anyone who either can’t make a listening session or prefers to complete the survey a chance to articulate their ideas and concerns.

Our mission statement closely mirrors the statutory role and mission set forth in Colorado Revised Statutes ยง 23-60-201.

Our mission is to provide high quality educational opportunities to all with a focus on student success and community needs, including:

  • Occupational programs, including certificates, associate and bachelor degrees, for youth and adults in career and technical fields;
  • Two-year transfer educational programs to qualify students for admission to the junior year at other colleges and universities; and
  • A broad range of personal, career, and technical education for adults.
